"Christmas Calender School", Costa Rica

How it started

- the story abot a "Christmas Calender School".

Christmas 1990 Radio Denmark published a Christmas Calender for the benifit of a Rain Forest School in the Central American republic Costa Rica. When the children teared off the caps of the Christmas Calender they glued them with the backside outwards on a colorfull poster with plants and animals of the rain forest. (see the picture)
My children, at that time 4 and 2 years old, tried to follow the story on TV about a poor family, which didn't had enough funding for a school uniform, why the daddy had to wash gold in the Corcovado National Park, although this was forbidden. Thanks to a kind policeman, the dad managed to get at piece of gold, just big enough to buy a school uniform for the girl. (see the picture)
The profit from the sales of the Christmas Calender went to the Rain Forest School, situated i the rain forest and having the purpose to teach the Costa Rican children about how to preserve and utilize the rain forest in a sustainable way. (see the picture)
I have together with Jørgen Lobedanz visited this "Christmas Calender School" in 1994 supported by DANIDA og The Danish Department of High Schools' traveling fond. This study tour have resulted in lectures about the rain forest, visit to the local "Rain forest" at our high School "Tornbjerg Gymansium". And a study tour in 1997 with pupils and students from our school.
